Zork-tastic…
Did you ever want to read a full history on that classic adventure game, Zork? Well, some fool rather interesting person decided to do just that over at Gamasutra. Oh yes… Matt Barton actually researched the history of Zork and wrote a rather impressing cover feature on the game, which is meant to preserve the history of the first ten games voted into Digital Gaming Canon. The Digital Gaming Canon, according to Gamasutra “provides a starting-point for the difficult task of preserving this history inspired by the role of that the U.S. National Film Registry has played for film culture and history”. So, Matt is actually trying to preserve gaming history, and that is pretty darn cool.
The article follows the history of Zork and pretty much game history in general. I mean, Zork start out as a text based adventure, or interactive fiction. That’s all gamers back in the early 80s really had, so this game helped pave the way for people to want more out of their computer than just something that would output text to you. They wanted it to look and feel like real life, and slowly but surely, that’s where games are headed today. I mean, look at all these FPS games that were featured at the E3 Expo. Most of these games make me feel as though I’m right in the middle of a massive warehouse, shooting at other people. And there’s no better way to spend your weekend.
The article is pretty extensive, but it is rather well written and has a lot of information about one of the favorite text based adventure games of ALL TIME. So, give it a read, won’t ya?
