On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - A Preview
Do you know what happens when a popular online web comic turns into an adventure game? Well… it gets previewed, that’s what! And since it IS an adventure game, people like me will post about it on their blogs! I’m sure you’re all very excited, aren’t you?
Kotaku recently did a preview of Penny Arcade’s new adventure game: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness First Impressions. You know a game has to be good when you read a preview that has the following description:
…to plow your way through such iconic enemies as hobos, clowns mimes and even barber shop quartets…
I do love to dispatch me some hobos and clown mimes using my various super powers. I mean, clown mimes? Aren’t clowns by themselves bad enough? But they have to be clown MIMES? I think I might have nightmares for weeks just thinking of it.
And how does this game resemble an adventure game? Well, I’ll tell you. According to Flynn De Marco, the guy who did the preview, it reminded him of the old syle LucasArts point n’ click adventure games, which is what the Penny Arcade team, along with Hothead Games were really focusing on. There’s also a lot of humor, that you would expect from a web comic. Right? RIGHT?
Watching the game really made me reminisce about the old point and click Lucas Arts games, on which PAA is heavily based. Engaging in dialog with NPCs will give you a variety of choices in answers, many resulting in additional razor sharp commentary by Gabe and Tycho. It should be noted that there are no voiceovers in the game and all conversation is done through comic style word balloons with dialog that had me laughing aloud a lot.
I can’t wait for this game to come out, so that I may kill hobo clown mimes and laugh while I’m doing it.
