Innovation
Is gaming innovation becoming a thing of the past? Quite frankly, I think it is. All the new games coming out in this generation are becoming a lot like the games that came out before it. You have your first person shooters that focus on killing bad guys. Can’t say that’s really innovative. Or how about those sports games, where the only thing that changes from year to year are the graphics. I’m sorry, but I think I was over the whole sport game thing when I played John Elway’s Quarterback for the Nintendo about 20 years ago. Sure, the graphics weren’t the greatest, but you can’t get much more involved with a sports game. Even the MMORPGs are quickly becoming boring. There’s not much more to a MMORPG then gaming levels and becoming the next l33t character. RPGs are about the only saving grace, because Adventure games are quickly becoming a dying breed.

Now, I believe the reason innovation is slowly dying is because people go out and buy that brand spanking new FPS, that was just like the one before it… or the MMORPG, just because that’s what they’re friends are playing now. Publishers will only put down money for something they know they will sell. I know I can’t blame them, but come on. There are only so many aliens I can shoot without becoming completely bored. What about those truly innovative games, like the Monkey Island series, or Indiana Jones or even the King’s Quest series, where you have a completely different story line with a completely different goal every time. These games are usually filled with great story lines that will entertain you for hours.

For example, Psychonauts (yeah, I like that game! Hush!) was an excellent game, but sold minimally in stores. Why? No one thought it would sell, because it was an adventure game, therefore big companies, like Xbox wouldn’t pick it up. Xbox was suppose to be the only distributor, but dropped it like a hot cake when a couple other adventure games didn’t do too well on the market. Ahh, the joys of being a game developer.

Perhaps I’m just rambling. Well, I know I am, but I just read this great article from www.gamespot.com that talks exactly what I’m talking about. Innovation and how it is dead in the gaming industry. Go ahead and take a look. It’s a great read that I’ll think you’ll enjoy if you’re an avid adventure gamer. Here ya go: Bitter medicine: What does the game industry have against innovation?
