IGN Makes Ron Gilbert Cry Like Little Sissy Man
Oh, alright… IGN didn’t really make Ron Gilbert - AKA Grumpy Gamer, cry. I just made that up. I was just trying to get people to read my blog. We’ll see if it works when Ron Gilbert comes to my site and demands that I take it down, because I’m slandering his name. Ron, I really do love you. Honestly. You made my childhood and just a few of my dreams come true… you stud.
While IGN may or may not have made Mr. Gilbert cry, they certainly did interview him. Why? Because like you all know, this years marks the 20th year anniversary of the creation of SCUMM, that wacky game engine that made all those fun adventure games! And what better way to celebrate the creation of SCUMM, then by talking to the SCUMM creator himself?
You know what’s really awesome? That Ron started programming on the Commodore 64. Well, maybe that’s not all that awesome. Maybe it’s only awesome because I, too, am a programmer by trade and am an overall nerd. I also like the Commodore 64.
One of the best things about SCUMM is SCUMMVM, which takes most games built with SCUMM and ports them to lots and lots of different types of platforms. Here’s what Ron has to say about SCUMMVM:
I think it’s great that it’s been ported to so many platforms. I remember how difficult it was to work with and I’m amazed that they’ve made it compatible with so many different games. It just completely blows me away. I actually saw someone playing Monkey Island on the DS. Really, really neat.

The article/interview is pretty interesting, as it goes into a little detail of what exactly SCUMM did for LucasArts (and other game companies) back in the day. It also talks a little bit about what it is that Ron is doing, besides writing down all of his problems and woes on his Grumpy Gamer website.
