Dying Genres - an article
Over at Game Informer, there is a new article called Disappearing Genres II: What Genres Are Struggling For Survival in which Meagan VanBurkleo, the writer, talks about dying game genres. And guess which genre just so happens to be on that list? Oh, if you guessed “adventure games”, then you are absolutely right. But is it a dying breed or is it one of those ones that people still play, but they just don’t like to admit that they play it?
I mean, there are tons of adventure games still coming out today. They’re not going to be your blockbuster games that have these extreme cinematic trailers. No, no… these are the games that sit quietly on the shelf at your local gaming store and just happen to catch someone’s eye.
But, this article doesn’t just talk about adventure games. It also talks about those shoot ‘em up games we all know and love and even the fishing games that we all have tried at least one time. Well, maybe not everyone. I mean, I haven’t. Fishing is boring enough without trying to play it on a gaming system.
At the end of the article, Meagan also accesses which game genres are NOT dying. Guess what genre won’t be dead for some time to come? The casual games that offer small puzzles you can beat within 10 minutes, get tired and turn the system off. This just offers proof the adventure games can make a come back. I mean, adventure games are self paced, aren’t they? So, they can definitely make a come back. Let’s hope!
