An Intervideo with Richard Garriott
Gamespot does this great segment every so often where they do video interviews of the people who are Behind the Games, meaning the people who develop and program the wonderful games that we all so dearly love. The latest Behind the Games segment that Gamespot did was on the creator of the Ultima series, Richard Garriott (link goes to a very interesting Wiki article. Read it!).
In the interview, Garriott talks about his early development days, where he’d program his games on punch cards, make a move and then wait for a piece of paper to print out to figure out his next moves. He also mentions the first game that he published in the early 80s, Akalabeth, which he sold in little plastic baggies at a computer store he used to work at. Man, how times have changed. This game is what took him from working in a computer store to creating epic computer games. There is also mention of a new game that Garriott is working on called Tabula Rasa.
The interview is pretty long, probably around 15 minutes long, but well worth the watch!
