Al Lowe: My Hero

by Amber on April 6th, 2007

When I was a young lass, my father had a sacred Commodore64 that my brother and I held dear. Our other brother was much to young to understand the awesomeness of this computer system, but me and Josh… we loved our Commodore64. Now… somehow my dad had about 2.3 million games for the Commodore. How he got them all? I don’t know. I’m sure it was by no means that were deemed legal, but we didn’t know the difference and we played them with ill disregard. You could say that the Commodore64 was the thing that got me into gaming.

Why am I going on and on about the Commodore64? Well, I was reading an interview on G-Wie-Gorilla (a nice and long interview) with the famous adventure game creator, Al Lowe, and I came across some screenshots that made my little heart pitter patter and my skin to raise in goosebumps. Ahhh, nostalgia Here are those screenshots:

Yes, my friends. That is a wonderful game called Donald Duck’s Playland and basically you got to put Donald to work so that he could earn enough money to build a playground for his ingrate nephews: Huey, Dewey and Louie. My brother and I would spend hours at a time throwing fruit into crates, or helping out the airline by throwing packages into a luggage vehicle, so that we could build those nephews the best damn playground ever. And I completely forgot about it until today.

When my brother, Josh, saw these lovely images, he exclaimed “HOLY EXPLETIVE”, but he didn’t say “expletive”. He said “shit”. Indeed, Josh. Indeed, indeed.

Apparently, Al Lowe was the genius behind this game. And since I already love his other games, such as the Leisure Suit Larry series, I firmly believe that Al Lowe help raised me to be the wonderfully sarcastic freak that I am today. So, my hats off to you, Mr. Lowe.

Now, this is a call to you, my fellow gamers. I ask you to sit down and think long and hard about those games you loved as a child, but forgot completely about. Then why don’t you leave me a comment and maybe… just maybe, you can put a little nostalgia into the hearts of others. Ahhhh….

Shockingly I have such fond memories of a more publicized Al Lowe game, which ..ah.. was no other than Larry 1. Then again I grew up in such a perverse and degenerated environment it would make a 19th century Parisian prostitute blush. Anyway.

Did you know Al Lowe is giving this game away for free over at his site?

Mmm, Larry 1… That was good stuff. My dad wouldn’t let us play it, but eventually, we were able to be alone enough to see all of its disturbingly sweetness. Ahhhhh.

I did not know that! I’m totally downloading it. Thanks for the info, Gnomey.
