A Poll…
I put up a poll over on the right side of the site… now, the question is important. I was reading from a journal somewhere and someone said that they didn’t think that the Zelda/Link series was actually a RPG, but more of an adventure game. Now, I had never thought of the Zelda series as being anything more than a RPG, so it blew my mind that so many people didn’t agree that it WAS a RPG. These people were saying that RPGs generally have some aspect of your character “leveling” up, with stat increases or what have you. I guess that’s true for Link, right? Except as you get further along, you do get more of those heart thingies that ultimately make you more powerful. And then you always get the bigger and better weapons, too. I guess I still see this series as a RPG. Those people are crazy.
So, go vote… and better yet, after you vote, tell me WHY you voted the way you did. This question has been bugging me all week!

Amber, Zelda isn’t an RPG. There are no experience points. Indeed, you get more powerful as you get deeper into the game, but this improvement is dependent on your ability to find the items to make Link more powerful.
For example, if you can’t get the hearts, you won’t get more health. In RPGs, you get more health by leveling up, which is done by fighting more monsters and gaining experience points. You don’t necessarily get more powerful when you beat more monsters in Zelda. You still need the hearts, which are not automatically obtained unlike XP.
Link also doesn’t have stats. There’s no number-crunching that happens in the background. You’re only as good as your hand-eye coordination.
In RPGs, it’s the stats that determine your success when attempting something or not. In Zelda, you rely solely on twitch. There are no stats like STR, DEX, CHA, CON, etc.
Sure, there’s health in Zelda, but every game that uses some form of combat system also has health.
Zelda is action-adventure (action for the fighting and adventure for the puzzles).
