A Future for The Longest Journey franchise?

According to this article in Adventure Gamers, there might be a future for The Longest Journey/Dreamfall series. As you may or may not remember, Dreamfall left us at a bit of a cliffhanger… I hate cliffhangers. Especially in games.

Because you never know of those bastard like gaming companies will ever put out the next sequel. Bastards.

Bastards.

I have a lot of tension today, can you tell?

Okay, I don’t really. I just like saying “bastards”, because it’s a funny word.

Anywho… Adventure Gamers hint that maybe the next version of The Longest Journey will be an online game. They believe that since Funcom, the company who is responsible for the greatness of the Longest Journey series, are focusing mostly on MMORPGs, such as Anarchy Online and Age of Conan , that the next game might have an MMO presence.

Plus, in Funcom’s third quarter fiscal report, Funcom hints at a new MMORPG set for development:

The World Online, Funcom’s next Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO), was approved for entry into the first phase of full production.

I like random pictures. They’re entertaining.

But again, this is all speculation, though I think it would be kind of cool to turn TLJ into a MMO, but then you lose the entire storyline, which I think is what has kept a lot of people hooked to the series. The worlds of Arcadia and Stark, in my opinion, would transfer well into an MMO world, where you can stab other players with ease. I love stabbing other players.

I, myself, like MMOs, but get tired of them quickly, as there is no end in which I can reach. I have problems with long term goals. Maybe that’s why I never passed the first grade.

Hmmm. I should reflect on that.

There have also been rumors, according the Adventure Gamer article that TLJ may be heading the way of an episodic adventure game, much like our pals Sam and Max. In the article, they mention that Ragnar Tornquist, the creator and developer of TLJ, has a blog entry that mentions this very topic. Apparently he likes the idea.

I say, go with that idea, as long as you can make each episode more than 2 hours long (muttermutter)… There’s nothing like getting hooked on something and then having to wait another month, or even two to play the next portion of it.

So, there you have it. TLJ… part 3? It sounds like it is definitely happening, but how will they do it?

What are your thoughts?

[…] A few months ago, I wrote a post talking about an article that Adventure Gamers wrote alluding to the fact that several sources pointed at an episodic Dreamfall game. Now, according to this article at Adventure Gamers, your and my wishes have come true. The last chapter in the game isn’t going to be coming out in just one big game, but instead it shall be delivered to us in a bunch of smaller episodes that may or may not be release in a full retail version of the game for PCs and maybe some consoles after all the episodes have been completed.
